Fennel is a member of the Umbelliferae family and is used as a vegetable
and a spice. A mixture of Fennel and Aniseed seeds, called paan, is
commonly chewed in India after a curry meal as a digestive aid and
to freshen the breath. The essential oil is extracted from the seeds
that are found at tips of the flowering parts. It has been used to
help relieve menstrual cramps, and to help regulate menstrual cycles.
The oil has a diuretic effect when massaged into the kidney area and
lower limbs. It is sometimes used for sluggish circulation or for
cellulitus.
