Myrtle
oil is extracted from the leaves and twigs of the Myrtus communis
shrub. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family as do Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus
globulus) and Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). The fruits are
sometimes used as a cooking spice in Italy and Greece. The leaves are
used in some commercial cough preparations.
Myrtle
oil is excellent as a milder version of Eucalyptus oil. Traditionally
used for bronchial complaints in the young and the elderly, and for
muscular aches and pains.
Painful
coughts and bronchitis - add 2 drops to a bowl of hot water, then cover
the head with a towel to confine the steam, and inhale the vapors
alternating through the nose and mouth in order to coat all respiratory
surfaces. Repeat this procedure 3-4 times a day.
Muscular
aches and pains - add 5 drops of Myrtle oil to 1 tablespoon of
vegetable oil. Massage gently into affected area. Cover affected part
with a warm compress to help relieve stiffness.
